More than a decade ago, Phuket was just another tiny island in the Andaman Sea. However, since the mid-1990s, it has become one of Thailand’s most popular holiday destinations. And though it is known as an idyllic beach paradise of sunshine, sea, and sangria-fueled nights out on Patong beach, there are plenty of other activities to consider during your visit.

Try Snorkeling, Scuba Diving, Kayaking

Scuba divers will have no trouble finding a dive shop on the island of Phuket. The Andaman Sea surrounding Phuket is home to some of the best diving in the world, and many dive shops are headquartered on the island. You can also go diving on your own, with many of the dive shops renting out equipment for those who prefer to enjoy their diving in the comfort of a rental mask, snorkel, and flippers.

Phuket’s diving is best between October and May, peaking in May. In June, July, and August, water visibility isn’t quite as good because of the monsoon season, but the tropical rains are fun to paddle through.

Snorkeling is also a great way to enjoy Phuket’s marine life for those who want a safer introduction to the underwater world. A good portion of the island’s coastline is a marine national park, allowing for a beautiful experience for snorkelers.

See the Big Buddha

See the 45-meter Big Buddha that sits atop Nakkerd Hill, between Kata and Chalong. This is a popular activity in Phuket; plus, you don’t need to spend money to enter the grounds. However, there is an option of donation that goes to maintenance. The Big Buddha is an active temple; who knows, you may even receive blessings from a monk?

Go Windsurfing

Phuket has many beautiful beaches, and kite surfers are common in the waters off of Phuket. Kitesurfers will be able to find schools that offer lessons, as well as equipment rentals.

Kitesurfers should be aware that the kite season is typically between November and March, and typically ceases before the monsoon season. However, there are rainy days during that period as well.

Spend Time at Blue Tree Lagoon

Located in Cherngtalay, Phuket, the Blue Tree Lagoon is bustling with so many activities for families, friends, and couples. There is something for everyone to enjoy here, whether you want to drink and float on Blue Tree’s amazing lagoon or go zip lining. Whatever it is, you sure will find a lot of activities you’ll enjoy here.

Experience the Walking Street Market

Experience Phuket Town’s Walking Street market that takes place on Sunday evenings. The market showcases a wide range of delicious and authentic Thai food, making it a great way to start the week.

Get in Touch with the Local Culture

If you’re looking for a more cultural experience during your visit to Phuket, Thalang National Museum is a great place to start. The museum showcases the history of Phuket’s Khmer culture, in addition to its own history from its landing in Phuket.
